NJAN Activity Seminar － Japan-Norway Seminar on Circular Agri-Biotech

The Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO) hosted two invited speakers from Tokyo University of Agriculture (NODAI), Prof. Kenji Irie and Prof. Mami Irie through the Activity Seminar of the JSPS Norway – Japan academic network (NJAN). The seminar was organized by Dr. Thiago M. Inagaki, Dr. Lu Feng, and Dr. Ikumi Umetani from NIBIO. The visit aimed to establish a long-term scientific partnership focused on sustainable agriculture, bioresources, and the circular bioeconomy. During the visit, which coincided with the 120th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Norway and Japan, NIBIO Director General Ivar Horneland Kristensen signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize cooperation in areas such as waste treatment, climate-smart agriculture, and nutrient recovery. The Japanese delegation toured several key research facilities, including the Norwegian Genetic Resources Centre and the Vollebekk Biogas Laboratory, to explore Norwegian innovations in converting organic waste into energy and managing genetic resources. Looking ahead, the collaboration will include PhD student and guest researcher exchanges starting in 2026, to integrate Japanese technological capabilities with Norwegian expertise to address global environmental challenges through future joint applications to the Norwegian Research Council and Horizon Europe.

On December 10 the JSPS Norway-Japan Academic Network (NJAN) Activity Seminar will be held at Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO) Auditorium – Oluf Thesens vei 43 (O43), Ås, 1430, Norway.
