Title: Senior Researcher
Institution: National Institute of Aquatic Resources, Technical University of Denmark
Host Institution in Japan: Graduate School of Integrated Science and Technology, Nagasaki University
Host researcher: Prof. Yoshiki Matsushita
Fellowship period: 2023.10.29-2023.11.18
Prof. Yoshiki Matsushita was very helpful throughout my BRIDGE fellowship experience, including getting me accommodation in the university’s guesthouse which was very nice. He also put me in contact with some other fisheries research groups to visit around Japan.
At Nagasaki University, I presented some work I had recently done showing how to mathematically include changes in fishing gear into fish population forecasts. Prof. Matsushita and his student were very enthusiastic about it and that encouraged me to publish it. Thanks to their enthusiasm I will complete that manuscript with collaborators this fall. I will try to go back again soon to talk more about statistical methods and possibly to teach them to play underwater hockey for freediving training.

I met Dr. Mollie Brooks, Technical University of Denmark with experience studying in Japan, at an international conference in Shanghai, China and hosted her. She is an expert in mathematical ecology and fully utilized the Japan Rail Pass to hold seminars across Japan, sharing her knowledge and skills with Japanese experts. She was very active, so I was only able to assist her by preparing documents and recommending a good ramen restaurant.
