Overview:

This program provides opportunities for young pre- and postdoctoral researchers from the US, Canada and Europe to receive an orientation on Japanese culture and research systems, and to pursue research under the guidance of host researchers at Japanese universities and other research institutions over a period of 2 months during the summer.

Eligibility:

-Pre/postdoctoral researcher

-Be a citizen or permanent resident of Sweden, UK, France, Germany, Canada and USA

Duration:

72 days in summer

(64 days from any date in July 1, 2020 through March 31, 2021 due to the outbreak of the COVID-19, in FY2020.)

What we offer:

-Round-trip air ticket

-Maintenance allowance of JPY 534,000

-Research support allowance of JPY 158,500

-Overseas travel insurance

Postdoctoral Fellowships

Pre- and postdoctoral researchers

Duration:

1 - 12 months

What we offer:

-Round-trip air ticket

-Monthly maintenance allowance

 (PhD holders: JPY 362,000, Non-PhD holders: JPY 200,000)

-Settling-in allowance of JPY 200,000

 (only applicable for Fellows with 3 or more months of tenure)

-Overseas travel insurance

Experts will conduct a screening from a professional point of view. The institution in charge will avoid conflicts of interest to ensure that reviews are conducted fairly and objectively. The screening policies are as follows:

1) Candidates should be outstanding researchers who are expected to contribute to the future of science.

2) The research plan should be of high scientific quality, specific and realistic.

3) The proposed collaboration should clearly develop synergies and form strong linkages between Japan and Sweden.


Notification of results:

It will be notified from JSPS Tokyo around the end of May.

Eligibility:

Mid-career to Professor

Duration:

14 - 60 days

What we offer:

-Round-trip air ticket

-Daily maintenance allowance of JPY 18,000

-Research support allowance of JPY 150,000(maximum)

-Overseas travel insurance

How to apply:

Applications for the program should be submitted by a host institution in Japan. The host institutions must submit the complete documents to JSPS Tokyo by the closing date.

BRIDGE Fellowships

Overview:

This program provides JSPS Alumni with an opportunity to revisit their past host institutions in Japan, or to go to Japan to plan or implement joint research projects and seminars, to offer training or lectures for young researchers, or to prepare or attend scientific conferences and research meetings.

Eligibility:

Board or a regular member of either JSPS Alumni Club in Sweden (SAC), Finland (ACF), Denmark (ACD) or Norway (ACN).

Duration:

1) 14 - 30 days

2) Revisits are to start from July 1st, 2020 through March 31st, 2021.

What we offer:

-Round-trip air ticket

-Daily maintenance allowance: JPY 13,000

-Research support allowance of JPY 100,000(maximun)

-Overseas travel insurance

Closing date:

10th January, 2020

Evaluation process:

Each Alumni Club and JSPS Stockholm Office will conduct a screening fairly and objectively through the following policies.:

1) The revisit is expected to advance research and/or contribute to creating, sustaining and/or strengthening scientific networks between Sweden/Finland/Denmark/Norway and Japan.

2) Good pre-visit communication between applicant and proposed host researcher, and a concrete activity plan established between them.

3) In addition to the host institution, revisits will be made to a few other institutions for the purpose of engaging in discussions, giving lectures, or conducting other activities. Education-oriented activities may be included such as exchanging views with young Japanese researchers.
